Rule #4: Allow Open Space
Rule #4: Allow Open Space addresses the changing needs of your home. There are two aspects to this rule: first, open space allows your eye to rest, and second, open space allows for growth.
Too many things to look at fatigues the brain. The solution is to put things away out of sight. Now, it only counts as organization if you actually find a home for the item to live in out of sight. Just stuffing things into closets, drawers, or pockets does not count! Once you have cleared your counters, excavated your bedroom chair, and stowed all of your loose gadgetry, you will enjoy rest for your eyes.
The second benefit of allowing open space is the ease of expansion. If you max out every bit of storage space in your home today, where will you store tomorrow’s additions? My biggest mistake is organizing the pantry before grocery shopping because I order everything based on the current occupants. When I bring in the new batch of food, I have to undo the good work in order to make space for the bounty. In the same vein, a visitor will be much more comfortable in your home if you leave a drawer or two empty in the guest room and a little space in the closet. Don’t get carried away, though, because you might not want your guest to extend his stay!
Try it out! See how peaceful an open space can be.
