Rule #2--Double Up, Double Down, Double Trouble
Rule #2 get three perspectives.
Double up: have two of vital items, one in use and one on reserve. More than two might be too many! For instance, one set of sheets on the bed and one in the linen closet is plenty per bed in the house. Three sets means less space for other things. Having only one set means that you have no back-up when there is a crisis, like the washing machine deciding not to spin while the sheets are in it. You are sleeping on the mattress tonight!
Double down: There are times that one really is all that you need. Any more is wasteful and creates more work. How many coffee mugs does a person need? The more that I have access to, the more sit dirty in the sink. If only mugs were not so cute . . .
Double Trouble: When you have more than one of an item, store them together. Your brain should not have to keep track of more than one location for the dish towels. The exception (because what is a rule without an exception?) is for multiple points of use. I have scissors in the kitchen, the main floor command center, and the second floor office. The sewing scissors do not count because NO ONE is allowed to touch them!
